Success:
Recycling rates increased to five times the previous rates
From 10% to 50% of total waste
Eliminated 4 yards of waste per week

In 2007 in partnership with Greenwin Property Mangement Inc., Toronto Green Community (TGC) launched the Apartment Greening Pilot Program. The aim was to save property owners money and at the same time increase environmental stewardship. The program was a great success with TGC reaching 90% of the residents through various means of engagement. Recycling in the building increased from 10% to 50% of total waste.
The building chosen was 12 Deerford Road, a multi-residential building in North York. The building had 137 rental units with more than 500 residents.

TGC conducted an audit of the building's recycling capacity and created detailed recommendations that were implemented. Through the audit it was determined that education and outreach be a key part of the program.

A Lobby Launch marketed the building's new recycling program and supplied residents with a blue recycling bin. The Lobby Launch reached 40% of the building's residents while the rest were engaged through door-to-door visits.

At the end of the project, the Property Manager reported recycling in the building had increased from 10% to 50% of total waste which translated to a significant reduction in waste disposal fees.
The project received attention from the media. Two stories on the project were featured in local television and print media, and the local City Councillor gave it her endorsement.
