Staff changes at TGC
The arrival of spring has also brought changes to TGC…
Farewell!
With much sadness we bid farewell to two staff:
Minaz Asani, who became the first paid staffperson at TGC in 2001, has made numerous invaluable contributions towards TGC’s vision of a greener, more sustainable city. Minaz’s generous and unflappable spirit will be sadly missed but we wish her all the best in her role with Ecospark as a Live Green Toronto Community Animator.
Emily Martyn, who joined us in 2010, is responsible for taking our Garden and Food Programs to new heights. We will miss Emily’s ability to meet all challenges with confidence and humour and wish her all the best in her new role as Urban Agriculture and Local Food Specialist with Social Housing Services Corporation.
Welcome!
We are very happy to welcome Colette Slone to TGC as our new Garden & Eco-Programs Manager.
Colette holds a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Guelph, and recently completed the Food Security Certificate Program at Ryerson University. She is an avid urban gardener and brings a wealth of experience to TGC from her past positions as Coordinator of the Growing for Change Community Garden and Community Food Animator at LAMP Community Health Centre.
Colette has also volunteered with various environmental organizations in South Etobicoke. She served as Chair of the Lakeshore Planning Council’s Environment and Sustainability Committee for two years, and has been a member of Lakeshore Environmental Gardening Society since 2010.
Her vision of a greener Toronto includes seeing vegetable and herb gardens in every park, rooftop, balcony and backyard, and she looks forward to growing heirloom organic tomatoes on her balcony every summer.

Workbees in the Eglinton Park Community Garden
Hi TGC Members! Now that the weather is warming up and the sun is shining, we here at Toronto Green Community are itching to get the garden ready for summer! It has been a slow start to the season, so there is a lot of work to catch up on to prepare the beds for planting! NEW! Starting May 2012, there will be TWO workbees each week in the Eglinton Park Community Garden. The workbees will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 5- 8 pm. If you love gardening, have a green thumb, want to learn more about our fantastic garden or just meet new people, come on out to the garden during the workbees and lend a hand! We also have a full season of amazing workshops lined up, with a range of topics to suit everyone's interests (see attached flyer below). If you have any questions, you can contact Colette by phone 416 781 7663 or by email: garden@ torontogreen.ca. Happy planting!

TGC and Waste2Wonder a partnership for the environment Moving from their old location at Orchard View Blvd to their new office at St. Clair Ave. E. has given Toronto Green Community another chance to embody the green principles that it stands for. TCG took an innovative approach to solving the problem of divesting of unwanted furniture and acquiring gently used “new” furniture in seeking the services of Waste2Wonder, an organization that matches up used furniture with deserving groups that need it. Through this partnership, over 320 pounds of redundant furniture from the old TCG office were redistributed to other organizations in the surrounding area, a waste diversion rate of 45%. Furniture from TCG was transferred to the Village Keepers Child and Family Centre, a non-profit organization in Brampton that provides services for children and families, focusing on new immigrants, as well as to the Streetsville Baptist Church. |
